THE EARLDOM OF LEWES (1876) [United Kingdom]
and THE MARQUESSATE of ABERGAVENNY, CO. MONMOUTH (1876) [United Kingdom]

The Barony of Abergavenny, in the Peerage of England, dates from between 1066 and 1087, and was created by King William I. It was a Barony by Tenure (capable of being bought and sold, as opposed to purely by succession - passing to heirs) . On the death of the 17th Baron, in 1389, no heirs, either male or female, remained. The Barony was then in 1392 created as the Barony of Abergavenny, for Sir William Beauchamp.

Sir Edward Nevill was created 3rd Baron Abergavenny in 1450 and summoned to Parliament in right of his wife, Elizabeth Beauchamp, 3rd Baroness Abergavenny, who died in 1447. The title has remained in the Nevill family since that time.

The Earldom of Abergavenny was created on 17 May 1784 in the Peerage of Great Britain, for George Nevill, 17th Baron Abergavenny. Sir George was created Viscount Nevill on the same date (a title that was then used as courtesy title for the Heir-apparent to the Earldom.

The Marquessate of Abergavenny, Co. Monmouth, in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, was created on 14 January 1876 for Sir William Nevill, the 5th Earl of Abergavenny. The Earldom of Lewes was created on the same date.

The Heir-Apparent to the Marquessate (i.e. the Title-holder's eldest son) therefore would use the courtesy title Earl of Lewes. Should the Heir-Apparent have children, his eldest son would use the courtesy title Viscount Nevill.

The only son born to the 6th Marquess and Venetia Jane Maynard Nevill died in infancy, and there are no other surviving male heirs of the 1st Marquess. Accordingly, it seems likely that on the death of the 6th Marquess, the Marquessate of Abergavenny and the Earldom of Lewes will go into extinction. The Barony has passed on since the creation of the Earldom of Abergavenny, as a subsidiary title held by the current Earl. Therefore, the 18th - 21st Barons are listed under the Earldom. After the creation of the Marquessate, both the Barony and the Earldom became subsidiary titles to that of Marquess of Abergavenny, and the 22nd - 26th Barons are listed under the Marquessate.

A Note on the Barony of Abergavenny (1392):
It initially appears that the Barony's inheritance is to heirs-general rather than heirs-male, as the passing of the title to the 3rd Baroness, Elizabeth Beauchamp, shows. However, on the death of the 3rd Marquess and 23rd Baron, information shows that the Barony passed to the 4th Marquess rather than going into abeyance (as the 23rd Baron had two living daughters). Wikipedia states that the Barony has been in abeyance since the death of the 5th Marquess and 25th Baron, in 2000, and yet Burke's Peerage lists Baron of Abergavenny as one of the titles of the 6th Marquess, clearly indicating that the title passes to heirs-male. It seems that the title is not in abeyance, and that although the original Barony was By Tenure, this is now obsolete and no longer recognised, The author of the Wikipedia article is in fact confused between Barony by Tenure, and inheritance to heirs-general. This then means that Elizabeth Beauchamp was NOT the 3rd Baroness Abergavenny, but that the title was dormant from 1422 (the death of the 2nd Baron) until 1450 when her husband, Edward Nevill, was summoned to Parliament and made Baron Abergavenny.
