THE BARONY of ATHENRY, CO. GALWAY, IRELAND (1172) [Ireland]
Robert Bermingham, 1st Lord Athenry, was created 1st Baron Athenry in 1172 [Wikipedia].
A Note: Some sources say the Barony was created in abt. 1280, and show Sir Piers ("Peter") Bermingham, 4th Lord Athenry, as the 1st Baron. This is cited as having come from Cokayne's 'Complete Peerage'. However, Athenry.net states "The medieval town of Athenry began its existence with the erection of a castle by Meyler de Bermingham, 2nd Baron of Athenry in 1238" (this is a misprint and actually refers to the 3rd Baron, I believe...)
