THE BARONY of DE ROS (1264) [England]
The title of Baron de Ros (pronounced "Roose") is the oldest barony in the Peerage of England; it was created in 1264 for Robert de Ros. The title is sometimes shown as "de Roos", and sometimes the "de" is omitted.
This barony has inheritance rules that are slightly different from most Peerages and Baronetcies, where the title passes to the oldest male heir. The Barony of de Ros passes to heirs-general rather than heirs-male. This means that if there are no sons, the title may pass to a daughter. Inheritance law has no provision for precedence of one sister over another on the basis of age, as there is for sons. Therefore, if there is more than one sister living, their claims are of equal precedence, and the title goes into abeyance until either only one claimant remains living, or until the Sovereign terminates the abeyance in favour of one of the claimants.
Whenever the title-holder is male, he is styled the Premier Baron of England. However, if the title-holder is female, the next senior male baron is styled Premier Baron of England.

Edmund was a follower of Lancaster during the Wars of the Roses, and regained his family title after the accession of Henry VII.
As Edmund had no children, nor surviving brothers, his sisters were his heirs. Eleanor de Ros, Edmund's elder sister and co-heir to the title, married Sir Robert Manners; the next holder of the title was their son, George Manners.
Edmund's property went to his brother-in-law, Sir Thomas Lovel, who was husband to his sister Isabel de Ros. Sir Thomas Lovel died in 1524, and bequeathed the property to his grand-nephew, Thomas Manners, 1st Earl of Rutland (son of Sir George Manners and Anne St Leger; grandson of Sir Robert Manners and Eleanor de Ros.).
