The title Viscount Glerawly, in the County of Fermanagh was created on 20 September 1758, for William Annesley, who was the sixth son of Hon. Francis Annesley, fourth son of the 1st Viscount Valentia. On 14 November, 1766, the title Baron Annesley, of Castlewellan in the County of Down, was created, also for William Annesley. Earl Annesley (pronounced "Anns-ley"), of Castlewellan in the County of Down, is a title in the Peerage of Ireland that created on 17 August 1789 for the 2nd Viscount Glerawly, Frahcis Charles, with special remainder to his younger brother Richard, who succeeded him as 2nd Earl.
