<p>The Viscountcy of Anson of Shugborough and Orgrave, Suffolk, in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom was created on 17 Feb 1806 for Sir Thomas Anson. The title Baron Soberton, of Soberton, Co. Southampton, was created on the same date.</p>

<p>The Earldom of Litchfield was created in the 1831 Coronation Honours of King William IV, for Sir Thomas William Anson, 2nd Viscount Anson. The eldest son and heir of the Earl is given the courtesy title, Viscount Anson.</p>

<p>The Earldom was created twice previously to this, in the Peerage of England. The first creation was in 1644 by King Charles I, for Bernard Stewart, and became extinct on 1672. on the death of Charles Stewart, 6th Duke of Lennox and 2nd Earl of Litchfield.  The second creation was in 1674 by King Charles II, for Sir Henry Edward Lee; the 4th Earl of Litchfield, (and the last male heir of the Lee family), Sir Robert Lee, died in 1776, and the title became extinct.</p>
